About the Ottawa Chapter

Purpose Statement

The Bruce Denniston Bone Marrow Society is a volunteer organization and a national registered charity dedicated to raising funds for donor testing and increasing awareness on the importance of the One Match, a program of Canadian Blood Services. The Registry is a central repository responsible for the recruitment and matching of volunteer donors with patients requiring a stem cell transplant. The Society's head office is in Powell River, BC, with Chapters in British Columbia and Ottawa, ON, assisting in fund raising and public awareness objectives, to the benefit of the Donor Registry.

The purpose of the Society is to engage in activities related to bone marrow transplants, including but not limited to the following:

  • Educating the public concerning matters associated with bone marrow transplants;
  • Increasing the number of names on the One Match Donor Registry;
  • Increasing the ethnic diversity represented on the One Match Donor Registry
  • Raising funds for the work of the One Match Donor Registry
  • Raising funds for research related to bone marrow transplants;
  • Raising funds for the testing of potential donors and recipients, or the performing of bone marrow transplants;
  • Providing assistance to bone marrow donors, recipients or their families

BDBMSociety - Ottawa Chapter

The Ottawa Chapter was established on June 27th, 2000, on the occasion of the 3rd Annual Bruce Denniston Golf Tournament. Local volunteers, responsible for organizing the tournament on behalf of the Society, felt that their efforts would be more effective by being part of the Society and would perpetuate Bruce's legacy in the Ottawa area.

The Ottawa Chapter is interested in establishing new partnerships with individuals and organizations, who want to help save lives through the use of stem cell/bone marrow transplants.

In addition to its annual golf tournament, the Chapter is researching a variety of fund raising initiatives including: bingos; donations; grants; special events such as power breakfasts and fishing tournaments; and others that will raise and promote the importance of stem cell/bone marrow donation.

Constable Bruce Denniston & the Bruce Denniston Bone Marrow Society

The Bruce Denniston Bone Marrow Society was named after Constable Bruce Denniston, an RCMP member, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 1987. His only hope for long term survival was a bone marrow transplant. None of his family members were compatible donors, and so an unrelated donor was sought. The One Match Donor Registry formerly the Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry was in its infancy at the time and had few registered donors.

It was as a result of Bruce's need that his colleagues in the RCMP and the community of Powell River, B.C., rallied to his cause and spread the word about the need for donors, not only for Bruce , but for all patients in similar circumstances. This led to a ground swell of initiatives including the formation of the Bruce Denniston Bone Marrow Society. Thus from the beginning, the RCMP and it's employees provided support to the objectives of the Society. Although a donor match was eventually found for Bruce, unfortunately the disease had ravaged his body for too long, and he was unable to recover from the transplant.

The Society continues to raise money to help the Registry find donor matches as quickly and effectively as possible. This partnership between the Registry and the Society, in its second decade, is committed to a common goal of saving as many lives as possible. Attaining this objective means that every man, woman and child, needing a bone marrow transplant, can have hope for a second chance at life.

Over the years, the One Match Donor Registry, formerly the Canadian Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry has grown to contain the names of 210,000 potential donors. The Bruce Denniston Bone Marrow Society is proud to have helped contribute to this success.

Thank you.
