Registration Priorities/Opportunities/Benefits The Society's mandate is to raise money to assist Canadian Blood Services (CBS) to test donors and expand awareness on the role of the Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor Registry. The Registry donor base is currently comprised of largely those of Caucasian ancestry and it requires greater diversity. CBS is committed to meeting the needs of all patients, and this means encouraging people of all backgrounds to join the Registry. This is an opportunity for your company to assist in the fight against blood related diseases by affiliating yourself with the Bruce Denniston Bone Marrow Society. As a partner, you and your business will benefit from the positive exposure of being associated with a significant health issue, community involvement, event related publicity, and on some projects a recreational opportunity for employees. This is also an ideal opportunity to help educate the public as well as your own employees about bone marrow donation. The effect of a donation of bone marrow is significantly different from the donation of other organs. A bone marrow donor provides a life essential, but "replaceable" component of the body. Those in need of a transplant vary in age from the very young, to mature adults. There is little or no pain in making a bone marrow donation, and the donor has a recovery rate that is relatively short. Perhaps most significant is that a bone marrow donor does not suffer any loss of function, and they are eligible to donate more than once. The body quickly regenerates the bone marrow that has been removed for donation. Therefore, the bone marrow cause is one that bridges all classes, cultures, races, and almost all age groups. By affiliating with the Bruce Denniston Bone Marrow Society your Business/Corporation would be connected with a broad based humanitarian concern the gift of good health ! How YOU can Help The reason that fund raising is the paramount objective of the Bruce Denniston Bone Marrow Society is because of the significant costs involved with a stem cell/bone marrow transplant program. To test a volunteer donor it costs approximately $200 to have them fully DNA analysed for the Registry. With an ideal Registry base of 300,000 diversified donors this translates into a cost of $45 Million dollars! Once this basic cost is met there are the challenges of: storage and maintaining a data base; locating and matching of donors and patients; the operation of the Registry; keeping pace with the evolving technology; dealing with the needs and demands of patients; research into stem cell technology; the recruitment of donors; and the education of the public. Quite simply, $ = Donors and we need your assistance! Involve your organization by contacting the Bruce Denniston Bone Marrow Society - Ottawa Chapter and build a relationship in the battle against diseases of the blood like leukemia, through the use of stem cell procedures. The benefits are immeasurable.
